America's First Chaplain studies the family background, education, ministerial career, ideology, political activities, exile to England, and return to America of Jacob Duch , Anglican minister of Philadelphia's Christ Church during the American Revolution. Duch played a critical role in the early stages of the revolution as the spiritual mentor of revolutionaries but underwent a process of disaffection as the revolution's goals and leadership changed that culminated in a treason conviction, exile, and incorrect designation as a loyalist.
