Words and Wine Author Talk Story

Each month Kona Stories hosts an event with local and traveling authors. This event happens the First Tuesday evening of the month starting at 6 PM. Authors are available to talk story while you are getting your plate of appetizers and glass of complimentary wine. Authors then give a 15 minute talk about their book and themselves, the writing and publishing process or a short reading from the book. After all the authors presentations there is a time for individual questions and book signings with the authors. Expect 2 - 3 authors to attend each month and the evening to wrap up around 8 PM. Dress is Aloha casual wear.

 November Authors Are:

Phillip Swatek is a graduate of Punahou School in Honolulu and Yale University where he was a National Merit Scholar. As an actor he was the recipient of a grant from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and produced a number of Shakespeare's plays in Hawaii. In his youth he was a lifeguard for the City and County of Honolulu and still spends a part of every day in the water, surfing or training others in open ocean swimming. He holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and continues his martial arts practice in several disciplines. Phil is also a musician who can be seen at various venues and festivals on Maui. He lives on his farm not far from his hometown of Makawao and celebrates paniolo (cowboy) culture.

The Marijuanistas of Maui is a celebration of free-thinkers and risk-takers, of those who choose to follow their own code of morality in the spirit of enterprise and adventure. Many years before marijuana was legalized, industrialized, homogenized, and regulated, hearty visionaries grew their plants in the wilderness of Hawaii. Outlaws by definition, they defied law enforcement, politicians, thugs, violent nature, and a powerful criminal syndicate to create the nascent domestic marijuana industry. In this picaresque tale of love and money set in the 1980s, two Yalies and their friends attempt to harvest their crop and convey it to their broker in New York. What could possibly go wrong?

Howard Wallman has been around and knows what makes people tick.  As a psychotherapist in Los Angeles for over thirty years, he has improved the mental health of the average Jane and Joe as well as the extraordinarily rich and famous.  Before that, he was a real-life Mad Man, handling the advertising and marketing for all sorts of products and services.  He is divorced from a neurotic multi-layered woman and now married to a sane and loving man.  He is a father, traveler, ex-Army Reservist.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication and a master’s degree in Psychology.  He currently lives in Kailua-Kona Hawaii and sculpts in clay when he is now working on  “Life Coach in the Jungle — Dramedy in the Land of Fruits and Nuts” his next novel —  a funny and poignant look at Los Angelenos mesmerized by the antics and life lessons of a capuchin monkey.  Yes, monkey.

Lust requires no reasoning.  But what comes after mindless passion?  Is there a chance for true connection?

Devin Reese, the founder of the Afterlust Spiritual Retreat Center – hopes he can hold onto his sexual sobriety and live a quiet life.  But when the fetching adult daughter — who he has never met — arrives at the Center, it becomes the stomping grounds for seduction, betrayal, bloodshed…as well as possible heart-felt redemption.

Devin and the other characters at Afterlust will have to sort through the romanticized and villainized preconceptions that they have of one another if they expect to move beyond the initial attraction.  Is Devin who he thinks he is?  Is he the person others think he is?  Or like the rest of us is he a fusion of idolized and demonized assumptions of those around him?  Who are these people really and what are the disastrous or inspiring consequences of their choices?

Afterlust’s one-word appeal intriguingly falls between three-worded novels like Big Little Lies and Eat Pray Love.
