Words and Wine

Each month Kona Stories hosts an event with local and traveling authors. This event happens the First Tuesday evening of the month starting at 6 PM. Authors are available to talk story while you are getting your plate of appetizers and glass of complimentary wine. Authors then give a 15 minute talk about their book and themselves, the writing and publishing process or a short reading from the book. After all the authors presentations there is a time for individual questions and book signings with the authors. Expect 2 - 3 authors to attend each month and the evening to wrap up around 8 PM. Dress is Aloha casual wear.

July Authors are:

Eila Algood has been writing since childhood with many published works including: “On The Road To Bliss”, “Rhapsody in Bohemia”, plus pieces in newspapers, magazines and anthologies including Queer Families.   Her passion is to give voice to the invisible. Whether emotions, actions or experiences with the unseen world of Spirit, she’s committed to writing and speaking her truth.  Her certification in Transformative Language Arts inspired her to bring spoken word to her community by organizing and emceeing public readings. As deejay of Women’s Voices on community radio in North Kohala, she plays song and spoken word by female artists.  Speaking her written words in public readings is a favorite experience as it gives her the opportunity to share her positive, playful personality.

Weathering Life is a short poetic story involving Eila’s traumatic and dramatic experiences before, during and after her personal awakening.   It is one of many pieces in the anthology Queer Families published by Qommunicate Media.

Melissa Burovac is a writer and photographer on the Big Island of Hawaii. An avid outdoorswoman, Burovac enjoys outrigger paddling—both one-man and six-man—SUP, running, surfing, sailing, and scuba diving, as well as yoga. She is always up for adventure and loves doing things that scare her a little.

Melissa's first book Wandering was inspired by a 9-month solo round-the-world trip; it tells the humorous, non-fiction tales of getting lost in several countries. Melissa's second and third books, Sylvie Writes a Romance and Sylvie Falls in Love, are part of the Sylvie's Romance series; these romantic comedies were inspired when Melissa tried to write a romance novel and failed. Sylvie Falls in Love is the second of the series, taking place after a fictional romance novel is written, and Sylvie looks for love in her own life. Melissa is currently working on historical fiction inspired by the true-life adventures of a sailor and smuggler on Kauai.

Cheri Mandaquit is a driven individual, utilizing both her left and right brain on a daily basis. She uses her left brain while working full time at Clark Realty Corporation, and enjoying her right brain creativity with hand-drawn mandala inspired designs. Cheri moved to Hawaii from California in 1968 and has been spreading the aloha spirit ever since. She met the love of her life, Jack, who encourages her to pursue her creative passions, in Hawaii, and they have been married 47 years in June. Her detail oriented and often pattered artistic style spurred 3 years ago, while looking through modern coloring books. Through that discovery she decided to create that same beauty with her own personal flare.

Cheri currently has an Instagram page showcasing her designs and artwork @veryCheriArt. She has also expanded to display her Art in Peaberry & Galette and has a selection of her handmade cards with designs at Kona Stories Bookstore.
