12th Annual Cool Fusion: Festival of 1,000 Bowls

The Donkey Mill Art Center proudly presents Cool Fusion: Festival of 1,000 Bowls, celebrating 12 years of ceramic, musical, and culinary arts. The event will be held at Keauhou Shopping Center on Saturday, September 22 from 11am - 2pm. An assortment of handmade ceramics will be arranged on tabletops where guests can carefully consider their selections before indulging in a lunch of refreshing somen noodles.

Additional handmade ceramic items are available for as little as $10 each, with many other pieces of ceramic art, including larger bowls, vases, cups and other handmade ceramic wares will be available for purchase. This year the donated work of several notable mainland ceramic artists will once again be offered for sale alongside work by local talent. Kona’s own Gypsea Gelato will be on-site, serving a scoop of handcrafted gelato when you purchase a beautiful handmade gelato bowl.

For the past decade, Cool Fusion has supported arts education at the Donkey Mill, a non-profit art center in Holualoa.  Each year, renowned ceramic artists from across the island come together to create uniquely beautiful somen noodle bowls as a fundraiser for the ceramics program. These skilled volunteers meet every weekend for the preceding months until 1,000 bowls have been created, fired, glazed, washed and packed.  Be it a notch in the foot of the bowl or the patterns in surface decoration, their signature styles may be recognized by those familiar with the character of their work.  Some loyal fans have personal collections from each year of attending the festival.

The Donkey Mill’s ceramic department offers year-round classes for children and adults in pottery and sculpture, as well as special workshops taught by visiting artists from around the world.  A former coffee mill, the Art Center now functions as a gathering place where people can develop as creative, conscious, and healthy human beings through art education and experience.
