Book Groups and More!

"Let us read, and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world." -Voltaire

Our Lesbian Group:
Next up for this group is the Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein. Largely to amuse herself, Gertrude Stein wrote this book in 1932 using as a sounding board her companion Miss Toklas, who had been with her for twenty-five years. The book is full of the most lucid and shapely anecdotes, told in a purer and more closely fitting prose than even Gide or Hemingway have ever commanded.  Why read Gertrude Stein at all?  This article in the New York Times has some answers:  Reconsidering the Genius of Gertrude Stein.
Event Info: Tuesday, March 20th at 6:30pm

Just the Facts- Our Non-Fiction Group:

The Last Stand: Custer, Sitting Bull and the Battle for the Little Big Horn by Nathaniel Philbrick is this group's next topic. Philbrick has emerged as a historian with a unique ability to bring history to life. "The Last Stand" is Philbrick's monumental reappraisal of the epochal clash at the Little Bighorn in 1876 that gave birth to the legend of Custer's Last Stand. Bringing a wealth of new information to his subject, as well as his characteristic literary flair, Philbrick details the collision between two American icons- George Armstrong Custer and Sitting Bull-that both parties wished to avoid, and brilliantly explains how the battle that ensued has been shaped and reshaped by national myth.

Event Info: Tuesday, March 27th at 6pm

Our New Culinary Group:
Kona Stories' cooking maven, Tiare facilitates a monthly culinary group which meets the 1st Wednesday of each month at 4pm.  Please bring your favorite dish featuring the theme of the month as well as printed recipes to share with the group.  Everyone is welcome and you don't need to attend each time if you cannot; just come when you can.  This group is free, but donations are welcome.  The theme for April is: Southern Cooking!
Event Info: Wednesday, April 4th at 4pm

Second Tuesday- Our Fiction Group:
We are reading A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.  Debut novelist Harkness has crafted a mesmerizing and addictive read, equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense--a richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together.
Event Info: Tuesday, April 10th at 6:30pm
