Here's a couple of good things:
This week we had customers call us who had looked up books on-line and then wanted to order with us. A grateful thanks to Joni, Erica and Kim (take THAT, Amazon!).
And this from Laura Miller in Salon.com: "when you buy from an independent bookseller... you're helping to keep alive an important force in making our national literary culture more diverse, interesting and delightful." This is the best article I've read about the importance of bookstores in America.

Speaking of Special Orders:
If we don't have it in stock, we can get it. Order by Tuesday, Noon December 13th and (for most books) have it by Wednesday, December 21st. No charge for shipping or research.

Monet needs a new home.
Monet is a cat who used to hang out with us at Mango Court. She was feral, but in the last year, has grown to love people and attention. Her new person is no longer able to keep Monet, and we'd love to help her find a new home. She is a pastel-colored calico, beautiful and very sweet. Call us at 324-0350 if you can help.

Aloha! I just learned that Saturday, Dec. 3rd is "Take your Child to a Bookstore" day. I admit to wondering "Who comes up with these things?". You can learn the answer to that question for this particular day at: takeyourchildtoabookstore.org. Of course, we think any day is a good day to take your child to a bookstore. Meanwhile, we're happy to announce the return of Storytime in January. More details on Storytime in future e-mails.

Book Groups and more.
"Reading without reflecting is like eating without digesting" -Edmund Burke. Come reflect with our fun book groups.
Second Tuesday: our fiction book group.
The Tiger's Wife by Tea Obreht is the topic for the next meeting of this group. Weaving a brilliant latticework of family legend, loss, and love, Obreht, the youngest of "The New Yorker's" 20 best American fiction writers under 40, spins a timeless novel about a young doctor who confronts the inexplicable circumstances surrounding her beloved grandfather's recent death.

The death of legendary jazz trumpeter Joss Moody exposes an extraordinary secret, as the reminiscences of those who knew him form the basis for a moving portrait of a shared life founded on an intricate lie. "(A) hypnotic story".--"Time". We will do a 'White Elephant' gift exchange. Bring a wrapped gift that you'd never want to give or receive as a gift and we'll have some fun.

We are reading Vermeer's Hat; the Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World by Timothy Brook. "Vermeer's Hat" is a deftly eclectic book, in which award-winning historian Timothy Brook uses details drawn from the great painter's work as a series of entry points to the widest circles of world trade and cultural exchange in the seventeenth century.
