Aloha!

Put it on your calendar to come to Keauhou next Saturday for "Playing for Change". See box on right for details.  It's fun for a good cause!

Find the Typo!
Believe it or not, I re-read these e-mails at least 6 times looking for errors, typos, etc.  Yet there is usually at least one 'oops' that I spot when I open the e-mail AFTER it's been sent.  This was the case with last week's use of 'quite' instead of 'quiet'. Makes me crazy!  So, in the spirit of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em", I'm announcing a contest to "Find Joy's Typo".

Find the Typo in this e-mail and win.
The Night Circus
The first person to e-mail me to let me with this week's typo, will win an Advance Reader's Copy of The Night Circus. (Read a review of this excellent new book at Salon.com).  I'm not promising that there is a mistake because I'm still going to try to find them all, but, if past performance is any indicator, there's one lurking somewhere in this e-mail.
Book Groups and more.

Second Tuesday: our fiction book group.

Home by Marilynne Robinson is the topic for the next meeting of this group.  The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Gilead" pens a moving and healing book about families, family secrets, and the passing of the generations. I really enjoyed one of her earlier works Houskeeping; join us to discuss the most recent work of one of America's best modern novelists.

Just the Facts: our non-fiction book group.
This month we're reading Hellhound on his Trail: The Electrifying Account of the Largest Manhunt in American History by Hampton Sides. This book about the assassination of Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr. and the hunt for his killer has been described like this: "Viscerally dramatic ... spellbinding ... Both Dr. King and Ray come to life in these remarkable pages. " --"The New York Times".  "Impossible-to-put-down . . . a masterful work of narrative nonfiction, no one does it better than Hampton Sides." --"Associated Press".  "Gripping, exciting, and engrossing . . . hits us with the shuddering intensity of a high-speed collision." --"The Times of London".  I thoroughly enjoyed one of Sides' previous books, Blood and Thunder.  I'm only on page 34 and am not only intrigued, but have learned a couple of things about King that I never knew. Come join us in a lively discussion.

Our Lesbian group:

We'll be doing inventory and will have to skip this group for September.  Sorry; we really would rather be watching a movie with you!  Our next book will be Zami: A New Spelling of My Name  by Audre Lorde.  From the author's vivid childhood memories in Harlem to her coming of age in the late 1950s, Lorde brings into play her craft of lush description and characterization.
