"He should live with more books than he reads, with a penumbra of unread pages, of which he knows the general character and content, fluttering round him. This is the purpose of libraries.... It is also the purpose of good bookshops, both new and secondhand, of which there are still some, and would that there were more. A bookshop is not like a railway booking-office which one approaches knowing what one wants. One should enter it vaguely, almost in a dream, and allow what is there freely to attract and influence the eye. "To walk the rounds of the bookshops, dipping in as curiosity dictates, should be an afternoon's entertainment. Feel no shyness or compunction in taking it. Bookshops exist to provide it; and the booksellers welcome it, knowing how it will end."
--Economist John Maynard Keynes, as quoted in a Canberra Times piece headlined "Bookshops about more than just purchasing."

This is the best book I've read in 2 years! I am a bit of a medical junkie so many people found that there was just too much detail in that area and ...more Rules of Civility is a wonderful historical novel set in New York in the '30's. A chance encounter with a handsome banker in a jazzbar on New Year's Eve 1938 catapults Wall Street secretary Katey Kontent into the upper echelons of New York society, where she befriends a shy multi-millionaire, an Upper East Side ne'er-do-well, and a single-minded widow. $26.95.
New from Pulitzer prize-winner, Geraldine Brooks, is Caleb's Crossing. Forging a deep friendship with a Wampanoag chieftain's son on the Great Harbor settlement where her minister father is working to convert the tribe, Bethia follows his subsequent Ivy League education and efforts to bridge cultures among the colonial elite. $26.95. For those of you who can't get enough of Janet Evanovich.... Smokin's Seventeen is now available in hardcover! Dead bodies are showing up in shallow graves on the empty construction lot of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds. No one is sure who the killer is, or why the victims have been offed, but what is clear is that Stephanie's name is on the killer's list. With a cold-blooded killer after her, a handful of hot men, and a capture list that includes a dancing bear and a senior citizen vampire, Stephanie's life looks like it's about to go up in smoke. $28.00. Last but not least....FINALLY....Christopher Paolini's next book Inheritance comes out November 8th. This is the much-anticipated, astonishing conclusion to the worldwide bestselling Inheritance cycle. Not so very long ago, Eragon--Shadeslayer, Dragon Rider--was nothing more than a poor farm boy, and his dragon, Saphira, only a blue stone in the forest. Now the fate of an entire civilization rests on their shoulders. Long months of training and battle have brought victories and hope, but they have also brought heartbreaking loss. And still, the real battle lies ahead: they must confront Galbatorix. When they do, they will have to be strong enough to defeat him. And if they cannot, no one can. There will be no second chances. The Rider and his dragon have come further than anyone dared to hope. But can they topple the evil king and restore justice to Alagaesia? And if so, at what cost? $27.99.
If you want to be the first to read Inheritance you must call the bookstore and reserve your copy! This is the only way we will know how many to order ahead of time...so call us today! (808-324-0350).

Tuesday, August 9th at 6:30 PM is our 2nd Tuesday Fiction Book Club. Join us for a discussion on Anna Quindlen's latest book "Every Last One". This moving, suspenseful, and surprising novel by the #1 "New York Times"-bestselling author of "A Short Guide to a Happy Life" follows a suburban family and the disastrous, unintended consequences of what seem like small, casual actions. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event and should bring a pupu or beverage to share. Tuesday, August 16th at 6:30 PM is our Lesbian Group. This group meets once a month to discuss literature or films with gay content. This month the group will be discussing the newest book by Alison Bechdel, "Fun Home - A Family Tragicomic". Through narrative that is alternately heartbreaking and funny, readers are drawn into a daughter's complex yearning for her father. Apart from assigned stints dusting caskets at the family-owned "Fun Home," the relationship achieves its most intimate expression through the shared code of books. This group is free; bring a pupu or beverage to share.
Tuesday, August 23rd at 6:00 PM is our Just the Facts-Non Fiction Book Club. If you are a history buff or love reading non-fiction and want to talk about it with others this book club is your answer. This group meets monthly to discuss history, science or biography books. This month's discussion will be on "River of Doubt" by Candice Millard. At once an incredible adventure narrative and a penetrating biographical portrait, "The River of Doubt" is the true story of Theodore Roosevelt's harrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on Earth. Everyone is welcome and this event is free, bring a pupu or beverage to share. Joy's money back guarantee for first-time participants in this book group: read the book, come to our discussion and if you don't like the book we'll give you your money back!
Tuesday, September 6th at 6:30 PM is our local author event Words and Wine. This event gives local authors a chance to talk story with the public about their latest books. This is a free event for the public and includes pupus and wine. Authors are available for a meet and greet before and after the 30 minute presentation. Author line-up for September are JoEllen Heath, Hannah Dennison, and Julie Steelman. More information coming on these authors later this month.
Game Night. If you have never attended one of our game nights you have missed out on a lot of fun! We set up tables in the bookshop and play whatever games you bring. This event happens about once a month on a Friday night starting around 6 PM. We usually order a pizza or two from our new neighbor Bianelli's and play until about 9 PM. Look for this event to start up again in September.
Daytime Book Club? Once again we are interested in starting a book club that meets in the daytime. In the past this group has worked best October - April. We will be reading the same book as the fiction group that meets in the evening but will offer an alternative time for the book discussion. Keep an eye on this newsletter for exact dates and times for this group coming this fall.
