This is the best book I've read in 2 years! I am a bit of a medical junkie so many people found that there was just too much detail in that area and ...moreMany of you have meet Brenda's son Kyle at the bookshop and we have enjoy ed having his energy here for the last few years. All good things must move on! It is time for him to leave our Island and venture out into the big world of boarding school at U.H. Manoa. We couldn't be prouder of him and his vision to return to our Island as a certified teacher. He will be studying history then going into the teaching program. Kyle's last day of work is August 14 so you still have some time to stop in and wish him well.

Words and Wine is taking a break in August. Watch for an exciting line up in September. Elena Athena, our ' Angel Reader' is taking a vacation. Watch this space for when she's back (about the middle of August). Tuesday, August 9th at 6:30 PM is our 2nd Tuesday Fiction Book Club. Join us for a discussion on Anna Quindlen's latest book "Every Last One". This moving, suspenseful, and surprising novel by the #1 "New York Times"-bestselling author of "A Short Guide to a Happy Life" follows a suburban family and the disastrous, unintended consequences of what seem like small, casual actions. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event and should bring a pupu or beverage to share. Tuesday, August 16th at 6:30 PM is our Lesbian Group. This group meets once a month to discuss literature or films with gay content. This month the group will be discussing the newest book by Alison Beckdel, "Fun Home - A Family Tragicomic". Through narrative that is alternately heartbreaking and funny, readers are drawn into a daughter's complex yearning for her father. Apart from assigned stints dusting caskets at the family-owned "Fun Home," the relationship achieves its most intimate expression through the shared code of books. This group is free; bring a pupu or beverage to share.
Tuesday, August 23rd at 6:00 PM is our Just the Facts-Non Fiction Book Club. If you are a history buff or love reading non-fiction and want to talk about it with others this book club is your answer. This group meets monthly to discuss history, science or biography books. This month's discussion will be on "River of Doubt" by Candice Millard. At once an incredible adventure narrative and a penetrating biographical portrait, "The River of Doubt" is the true story of Theodore Roosevelt's harrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on Earth. Everyone is welcome and this event is free, bring a pupu or beverage to share. Joy's money back guarantee for first-time participants in this book group: read the book, come to our discussion and if you don't like the book we'll give you your money back!
Game Night. If you have never attended one of our game nights you have missed out on a lot of fun! We set up tables in the bookshop and play whatever games you bring. This event happens about once a month on a Friday night starting around 6 PM. We usually order a pizza or two from our new neighbor Bianelli's and play until about 9 PM. Look for this event to start up again in September.
Daytime Book Club? Once again we are interested in starting a book club that meets in the daytime. In the past this group has worked best October - April. We will be reading the same book at the fiction group that meets in the evening but will offer an alternative time for the book discussion. Keep an eye on this newsletter for exact dates and times for this group coming this fall.

Joy is taking a much deserved vacation so this bookstore is a little empty. Stop by and keep Brenda and Kyle company and pick up a great book. Some of the summer's hottest titles are: "A Dance with Dragons" 5th book in the George R.R. Martin series, "State of Wonder" by Ann Patchett, "A Game of Lies" by local author Rebecca Cantrell, and now in paperback, "Swamplandia" and "The Cookbook Collector".
