1001 Cranes to Benefit the Hawaii Island HIV?AIDS Foundation

Michelle and 1001 Cranes
Michelle Strobehn

Our good friend and book club regular, Michelle Strobehn has created this lovely 1001 cranes origami mobile. The practice of senbazuru is an ancient Japanese tradition. It is the art of folding one thousand origami cranes. As the legend goes, you will be granted one wish by a mystical crane. These holy creatures are said to live for a thousand years, hence the significance of the number.

Michelle has made this beautiful artwork to raise money for the Hawaii Island HIV/AIDS Foundation.  It took her over 100 hours over 10 months to complete this mobile that is sure to bring good luck to it's new home.  Each $10 donation gets you one chance to win.  No limit to the number of entries! We will draw to determine the winner on Friday August 26, the day before this year's "Taste of Life' benefit..

Now in Stock: Sarongs by Feedora
Feedora Sarongs

Each design is created by Feedora at her farm on the Big Island of Hawaii, and then beautifully executed by the talented craftspeople at her other home, an upcountry village in Bali, Indonesia. Feedora learned the art of BATIK from the women in her Balinese village. She has been working in Bali with these local artists and artisans for over 20 years.  All Sarongs are completely hand made of the highest quality rayon and the best colorfast Batik dyes.  Fifteen woman labor for 4 days to complete one sarong- depending on sunny weather to fix dyes. We have scarves, mini-sarongs, regular and plus-size sarongs.  Come in and see for your self these wearable works of art.

Book Clubs and More:

Game NightGame Night is moving to once a month.  Next game night will be This Friday, June 17th at 6pm.  Bring your favorite game and meets some new friends.  Bring a snack, pupu or beverage to share.

Tuesday, June 21st at 6:30, our Lesbian group will discuss Landing by Emma DonoghueA delightful, old-fashioned love story with a uniquely 21st century twist, here is a romantic comedy that explores the pleasures and sorrows of long-distance relationships.

Born to Run: A hidden tribe, superathletes and the greatest race the world has never seen by Christopher McDougall will be the discussion topic at "Just the Facts" on Tuesday, June 28th at 5pm.
Part adventure story, part extreme sports, "Born to Run" is a riveting tale about one journalist's quest to discover the secrets of the world's greatest distance runners--a reclusive Indian tribe living deep in the Copper Canyon of northern Mexico.

"The Second Tuesday" book group enjoyed Skyping with Alan Brennert last night.  Our next book is A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick
In rural Wisconsin in 1909, Ralph Truitt stands alone on a train platform waiting for the woman who answered his newspaper advertisement for "a reliable wife." But when Catherine Land steps off the train from Chicago, she's not the "simple, honest woman" that Ralph is expecting. We will discuss on Tuesday, July 12th at 6:30pm.
Here's a fun little link I found about How to Drink Like your Favorite Authors. Of course, these guys didn't have to be constantly marketing their books like authors do today.  I'm sure that gave them a lot more time to sit around and drink after writing for the day.
