Your local independent booksellers!
Aloha!
We're happy to be back from BookExpoAmerica in New York.  We picked-up lots of good ideas from fellow booksellers, learned about the great new books coming out in the fall and heard some interesting talks by authors.

Come in and check out the Advance Reader's copies we brought home from the publishers.  These are 'uncorrected proofs' of the final book before it's published that are used to generate interest for the book.  The first five people who mention this e-mail can have the ARC of their choice on the house;  after that, it's a $5 donation per book.  For Dortothea Benton Frank and Erik Larson fans, we also have autographed copies of their newest books.

Words and Wine:  Queen Emma's Church and A Tale of Avalon

Nancee Cline
Nancee Pace Cline

Nancee Pace Cline has written Queen Emma's Church in Kealakekua: Crossroads of CultureQueen Emma's ChurchThis book is a collection of stories, interviews and commentary concerning the history of a little Anglican church in Kealakekua, 143 years old.  The author embraces an interdisciplinary approach in a relaxed talk story style.  History is not treated as a subject by itself, but is tangled up with literature, music, philosophy, attitudes, trends, conflicts, opinions.   Brenda thoroughly enjoyed this book.  Come to Words and Wine on Tuesday, June 7 at 6pm to meet Nancee.   You're bound to learn something interesting about the island.

Also joining us is Mari Rose author of A Tale of Avalon: The goddess and the Grail..   Mari Rose

When the earth was a simple place, seasons and traditions honored, there was a balance for a life lived simply was about honoring and following the flow of nature.  For all who desire to return to such simplicity, this book is for you.   Here is a story of old, of the richness and fullness and innocence of Avalon.  Mari Rose is a dreamer, a dancer, a painter and a poetess.  In search for her own holy grail, she has encountered much magic and delight.

Book Clubs and More:

"The Second Tuesday Book Group" is reading Honolulu by Alan Brennert.  From the bestselling author of the dazzling historical saga Moloka'i comes the irresistible story of a young immigrant bride in a ramshackle town that becomes a great modern city. We're very excited to report that Alan Brennert will join us via Skype for this meeting on Tuesday, June 14th at 6:30pm.  Bring a pupu or beverage and join us.

Game Night is moving to once a month.  Next game night will be Friday, June 17th at 6pm.  Bring your favorite game and meets some new friends.  Bring a snack, pupu or beverage to share.

Tuesday, June 28th at 6:30, our Lesbian group will discuss Landing by Emma DonoghueA delightful, old-fashioned love story with a uniquely 21st century twist, here is a romantic comedy that explores the pleasures and sorrows of long-distance relationships.

Born to Run: A hidden tribe, superathletes and the greatest race the world has never seen by Christopher McDougall will be the discussion topic at "Just the Facts" on Tuesday, June 28th at 5pm.
Part adventure story, part extreme sports, "Born to Run" is a riveting tale about one journalist's quest to discover the secrets of the world's greatest distance runners--a reclusive Indian tribe living deep in the Copper Canyon of northern Mexico.
Author, Nobel prize winner and egotist, V. S. Naipaul recently suggested that women writers are 'sentimental' and 'unequal to me'.  (Guess that prize went to someone's head...) Here's a fun quiz from UK's The Guardian to see if you can tell if the writer is male or female: UK Guardian Authors Sex quiz(BTW: Joy only got four correct and she had even read three of the books.)
