Aloha!
Brenda's Birthday is this Wednesday, May 18th.Brenda and Chewy
She'll be taking the day off, but you can stop in any other day next week to wish her "Happy Birthday".  (If you want to know how old she is, you'll have to ask her yourself!)

We're both headed off to NYC for BookExpoAmerica on Saturday to learn all about the latest in the industry.  Minding the story will be Joy's friends from the mainland, Janna and Masato Yoshido and baby girl Kenzie.  Janna and Masato are incredibly nice and knowledgeable and Kenzie's a cute as can be;  come by to say 'Aloha'.  The store will be closed two Sundays: May 21 and 28, but will otherwise be open 10-6.

Local Interest book- Highly Recommended:

Nancee Cline
Nancee Pace Cline

Nancee Pace Cline has written Queen Emma's Church in Kealakekua: Crossroads of Culture.  This book is a collection of stories, interviews and commentary concerning the history of a little Anglican church in Kealakekua, 143 years old.  The author embraces an interdisciplinary approach in a relaxed talk story style.  History is not treated as a subject by itself, but is tangled up with literature, music, philosophy, attitudes, trends, conflicts, opinions.   Brenda can't stop talking about this book.  Pick up a copy now and come back for Words and Wine on Tuesday, June 7 at 6pm to meet Nancee.   You're bound to learn something interesting about the island.

More on the other Words & Wine authors next time.

Book Clubs and More:

Our Lesbian group will watch a movie on Tuesday, May 17th at 6:30pm, Room in RomeDuring one memorable, passionate night, two women become emotionally closer as they share their deepest secrets and desires. (This one's supposed to be racy!)

"Just the Facts", our non-fiction group is reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.   Acclaimed author Skloot brilliantly weaves together the story of Henrietta Lacks--a woman whose cells have been unwittingly used for scientific research since the 1950s--with the birth of bioethics, and the dark history of experimentation on African Americans.
We will meet on Tuesday, May 31 @ 5pm.

"The Second Tuesday Book Group" is reading Honolulu by Alan Brennert.  From the bestselling author of the dazzling historical saga Moloka'i comes the irresistible story of a young immigrant bride in a ramshackle town that becomes a great modern city. We're very excited to report that Alan Brennert will join us via Skype for this meeting on Tuesday, June 14th at 6:30pm.  Bring a pupu or beverage and join us.

Game Night is moving to once a month.  Next game night will be Friday, June 10th at 6pm.  Bring your favorite game and meets some new friends.  Bring a snack, pupu or beverage to share.

Also Highly Recommended:

Henrietta LacksThe Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Henrietta Lacks' cells are now in every laboratory in the world; used by scientists for every conceivable type of research.  This book is about science, bioethics, race and medicine, cell biology, social science, poverty, history and, of course, Henrietta's life. Joy says: "I learned something new on just about every page. This book tells an amazing story amazingly well."  It's the topic for our next non-fiction book club on Tuesday, May 31.  Read this book and see why humorist Leo Rosten said "Truth is stranger than fiction; fiction has to make sense." In Rebecca Skloot's hands, truth is also a great read.
There's a blog that posits new titles and covers of old books: "Better Book Covers".  Would Eric Carle's children's classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar be the same if it was called: Eat Until You Feel Pretty?
