Aloha!
Happy Easter or Passover (or none of the above) to all!  If you need a last-minute Easter gift of the non-candy variety, hop on over.  We have cards, finger puppets and keiki books for the occasion.  We will, however, be closed Easter Sunday.

New in this e-mail, we're going to regularly feature a book that one of us highly recommends.  See the review below for Cutting for Stone, if you're looking for a great read.

Don't forget we're offering 'extra credit' for your used paperback mysteries now through the end of the month.  Time to spring-clean that bookshelf?  Details below.

Book Clubs and More:
"Just the Facts" our non-fiction group is reading Gertrude Bell: Queen of the Desert, Shaper of Nations by Georgina Howell. Gertrude Bell was at one time the most powerful woman in the British Empire and was the driving force behind the creation of modern-day Iraq. This work is a richly compelling portrait of a woman who transcended the restrictions of her class and times and created a remarkable and enduring legacy.  We meet this coming Tuesday, April 26th at 5pm.

"The Second Tuesday Book Group" is reading A Novel Bookstore by Laurence Cosse.
Elegantly mixing the mystery and literary fiction genres, French author Cosse presents a paean to the love of good books that is sure to keep readers riveted from the first page to the last. This group meets Tuesday, May 10th at 6:30pm.

Our Lesbian group will watch a movie on Tuesday, May 17th at 6:30pm.  Room in Rome
during one memorable, passionate night two women become emotionally closer as they share their deepest secrets and desires.

Game Night is moving to once a month.  We will schedule a date for June when we are back from BookExpo.
Words & Wine: May 3rd at 6pm
WordsThis month's featured authors are:
  • Caren Ke'alaokapualehua Loebel-Fried, is a storyteller and second-generation carver who learned the ancient art of block printing from her mother.  Her latest book is Legend of the Gourd.
  • Lowell Angell, the author of Theatres of Hawaii  became fascinated with Hawai'i's theatres as a teenager and has been actively involved with them for more than 45 years as an avid historian and preservationist.
  • John Matthew McKnight, author of A Journey Before You. Murdered at the age of seventeen by a Catholic priest, John comes back to life.  John narrates his ordeals on a quest to tell the truth even if it leads to his own death.
  • Julia Castleton, daughter of the author of Runty's Adventure... A Story of Love. Runty leaves the comfort of his home to experience a bigger life in East Africa. This fictional tale is enhanced by Hawaiian artist, Dana Queen's original art.

Cutting for Stone
Brenda says: This is the best book I've read in 2 years! I am a bit of a medical junkie; many people found that there was just too much detail in that area and that the books was too long because of it. I however, thought it could have gone on and on forever...I was really sorry to see it end! Great writing....it took me places I would have never visited. Wonderful relationships....made me really think about what makes them work or not. Beautiful fragrances...not many books can do that! The 2nd Tuesday Book Club at Kona Stories read and discussed this book this month. The bookclub members mostly loved this book. There were a few comments about the medical stuff being too heavy and long. This book took us from Addis Ababa to NYC with rich descriptions and smells. The relationships between the brothers and their parents was beautiful and insightful. This book made us all think deeply about relationships, health care issues, our beliefs and values and our relationship with death. Consider this for your bookclub choice, it has many wonderful things to discuss.
It's National Poetry Month.  Check out the web-site Poets.org and look up that poem you memorized back in grade school, sign-up for a poem a day or find a poem to carry in your pocket. (let's see... I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree...)  We also have some lovely books of poetry here in the store.
