| Aloha! |
How are those New Year's Resolutions coming? If reading more or watching TV less was on your list or if you just want to be a better reader, we can help. Coming to a book group is a great way to get your year off to a good start and it can make you a better reader by giving you a reading challenge for the year. Read on for more book club benefits.
|
Why you REALLY, REALLY want to come to a Kona Stories book group: |
 | | Second Tuesday. |
For your Mind: If Book Owners have smarter kids, imagine how much smarter book readers are! Reading is mental exercise that expands your thinking and your horizons.
For your Body: Sitting on the couch is harmful. Book groups help in two ways. First, reading burns more calories than watching TV and coming to the group means less couch time.
For your Spirit: Social relationships are the key to a long and happy life. You'll meet a new and diverse group of people at our book groups in a relaxed and friendly environment. And yes, guys, you are welcome, too.
If all the evidence doesn't convince you: we have fun! At Mango Court, we were often asked "what was the 'loud party' last night?" The answer was almost always "It was book club!"
We currently have three groups to choose from. Each reads a different type of book (see the right for this month's books):
The Second Tuesday Book Group reads a variety of fiction works. We've covered classics and modern, serious and humorous, whatever will generate a good discussion. We meet the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm.
"Just the Facts" meets the fourth Tuesday of every month at 5pm. We read a wide-range of non-fiction, from works about Kit Carson to Catherine the Great, from Quantum Zoo to Monkeyluv, from the Making of a Marine Officer to the War that Killed Achilles. This is our smallest book group, but the books are Joy's favorites. (Don't tell the others.)
The Lesbian group alternates each month between a book and a movie. Books and movies range from current to classic works featuring lesbian issues or characters. This group meets the third Tuesday at 6pm.
Come the first time just to check us out. Next time, read the book, bring a light pupu or a beverage and enjoy. Before you know it, you'll be well ahead of the average American in books read per year. And if none of these groups appeals to you, come talk to us about the book group you'd like start.

Book Groups |
Our non-fiction group: "Just the Facts" has changed it's meeting time to 5pm. On Tuesday Jan 25, we will discuss: The Art of Making Money: The Story of a Master Counterfeiter by Jason Kersten. Kersten delves into the arcane world of a master counterfeiter with a fine eye for detail and novelist's grasp of character.
Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay is the topic for the "Second Tuesday Book Club" on Tues, Feb. 8 @ 6:30pm.
"Sarah's Key" offers a compelling portrait of occupied Paris and reveals the taboos and silence that surround this little-known episode in French history.
Mean Little Deaf Queer is the evocative title of our next Lesbian book. When author Terry Galloway writes about her breakdowns, her queer identity, and living in a silent world populated by unforgettable characters. We will meet Tuesday Feb 15 @ 6pm.

As many of you know, Brenda had surgery last week. I'm happy to report that everything went according to plan and that she's recovering nicely at home. The cats and I miss her at the store, but she should be back part-time within the next week or so.
