I started riding horses before I started school, and I bought my first horse for $300 when I was 13. I took a hiatus from horses from my late teens to my late forties, when I decided to write a book on wild mustangs because I was thinking of adopting one. My first book, The American Mustang Guidebook was published by Willow Creek Press in 2001. I adopted several mustangs and enjoyed gentling, training, and riding them, and then a fine old Spanish Arabian horse, while at the same time Willow Creek Press asked me to write two more horse books. Why Horses Do That, and Horse Tails and Trails were published in the next few years. I have really loved researching and writing my books, and taking all the photos for the first one. I think perhaps I have written all I can for this publisher on the subject of horses, but they may surprise me one day, and I will gladly write more books for them! I left the mainland in 2006, and have lived in Ocean View on the Big Island of Hawaii since then. I am looking to move closer to work in Kailua-Kona, but also to get some land and be able to have a few horses on my property again! My mustangs all went to good homes, and I am still corresponding with their new owners about them. Since I can't adopt any BLM mustangs here, I hope to someday help gentle and train the wild ones in Waipi'o Valley if they get too numerous, and need to be adopted out. I recently attended the First Annual Wahine Rodeo in Pu'u Anahulu and was very impressed with the number and skill of the riders and their horses I saw! I donated a copy of each of my books to them as awards. I hope they liked them! I would love to meet other horse lovers and sign a book to you!
