Shay Bintliff, MD is a poet, mother, and ER physician, who has a passion for surfing, paddling Hawaiian canoes, farming and gardening , golfing, and Wellness for all her family, friends and patients. She is medical director of the Emergency Dept at Hale Ho'ola Hamakua Hospital in Honokaa, and a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Surgery at the John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu.

Growing Old

Left on shore to watch the others

Do what I did best.

Painful, difficult, sad.

Yet all a part of growing old.

Feeling totally disconnected to

All that has matter all these years.

Mindful of all I had hoped for,

Yet failed to achieve

Yes, sounds so trite.

Always reaching for something better

Another challenge, another adventure.

Lost energy that fueled my life.

Now comes the time to tend the soul

Not the physique,

Not even the mind.

Just relax and go with the flow.

An ominous frightening certainty.

This growing old sucks!
