Words and Wine

May 2, 2017 @ 6PM

Each month Kona Stories hosts an event with local and traveling authors. This event happens the First Tuesday evening of the month starting at 6 PM. Authors are available to talk story while you are getting your plate of appetizers and glass of complimentary wine. Authors then give a 15 minute talk about their book and themselves, the writing and publishing process or a short reading from the book. After all the authors presentations there is a time for individual questions and book signings with the authors. Expect 3 -5 authors to attend each month and the evening to wrap up around 9 PM. Dress is Aloha casual wear.

Mark Martel

Writer/artist Mark Martel found the perfect home in Hawaii, where modern life meets the recent past and even prehistory. But his love of the past was slow to emerge.

Growing up in Dayton, Ohio, Mark took for granted local legends like the Wright brothers. Instead he worked in advertising, creating designs, illustrations and writing “copy.” It proved a good grounding and earned a dozen Addys, advertising’s Emmy.

In 2002 he reconnected with high school classmate Kate Hagenbuch, and sparks flew. Then came the Centennial of Flight in 2003, and her father introduced him to the Engineers Club. Both grew fascinated by its history. They built a website profiling its notable members, and one day Mark realized he had enough for a book.

The result was Dayton’s Children: The Unlikely Gang Who Brought Us Aviation, ‘The Cash’ And The Keys To The Road. It won praise from local writers, historians and civic leaders. Mark wrote most of the book, illustrated and designed it. Kate contributed two interviews.

By then they had moved to Hawaii, and saw his “local” book  had broad appeal. Aviation had clearly reshaped the islands. But so too had other Dayton creations. From e-commerce to foreign hacking, electric cars, environmental threats or progressive politics, seeds of it all traced to Dayton.

The material proved so fertile Mark plans to expand the chapter on industrialist Edward Deeds to book-length. Other island parallels are emerging as Mark adapts Darwin’s Voyage of the Beagle to graphic novel. Another graphic novel written and drawn by Mark, "Rare Earths," is due later in 2017, and relates to Hawaiian astronomy.

His art looks back too, from noir book covers to historical comics to painted reconstructions. Now Hawaii opens up a whole new world that Mark hopes to envision.

Jill Randall had over fifty jobs what hasn't she done? She’s the Jill of all trades and master of none.” In this uninhibited, autobiographical apocalyptic memoir, Ms. Randall unleashes her opinions on various subjects such as religion, politics and well… employment. Her wise cracks “will leave you wide-eyed and yet amazed by her artistic cleverness.” After over thirty years on the mainland, she picked the Big Island to spend the last half of her life on. When not writing, she teaches Kundalini Yoga and is also a Private Swim Instructor.

She Bites - Uncensored is a very interesting and amazing book about the unusual life of the author. It is told with thought provoking and hard-core real life stories.

Delightfully clear and practical, the author shares her life in ‘bite-sized’ stories and adventures. She reaches into the political, the personal and even the spiritual, sharing her journey with no hesitation in this book. She takes on the challenge of telling the good stories in a pleasant way yet does not hesitate to share the bad.

Her language will leave you wide-eyed and yet amazed by her artistic cleverness.

Surprising expectations with just a glance at the title of this well-written book, you’ll soon realize that the author is a multi-talented woman who has not one bashful cell in her body…and yes, she has photos of that body that has won beauty and fitness contests!!!

Jill speaks clearly from experience and is a ‘story-teller’ of the best kind, offering simple, accessible and fun insights that have real, practical value to live better and understand life. This should be labeled as a ‘self-help’ book in that she has shared many helpful opinions on how to live a meaningful life of quality.

The title of this exceptional book is so perfect because from beginning to end, the author has her grip on you with both big and small bites of your attention. The cover photo demonstrates so aptly the very serious nature of much of this book. It truly is a work of art in that the words fill the pages so fluidly and jump directly into your heart and mind. The author reveals so much about herself and ‘her story’.

The personal, political and spiritual stories are clearly born from her reality and are so exquisitely told. She takes humorous bites out of an amazing assortment of issues in all of our lives, chews on them, and creates an exceptional banquet!
