November 1, 2016 @ 6PM

Each month Kona Stories hosts an event with local and traveling authors. This event happens the First Tuesday evening of the month starting at 6 PM. Authors are available to talk story while you are getting your plate of appetizers and glass of complimentary wine. Authors then give a 15 minute talk about their book and themselves, the writing and publishing process or a short reading from the book. After all the authors presentations there is a time for individual questions and book signings with the authors. Expect 3 -5 authors to attend each month and the evening to wrap up around 9 PM. Dress is Aloha casual wear.

Frances Titosky was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1957. She graduated from the University of Alberta majoring in English with a Drama minor. Her intention was to go on to become an English professor until her Creative Writing professor told her to stop handing in film scripts instead of stories. She graduated with a Post Baccalaureate in Film from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada. Her first experimental film Jigsaw, a film depicting how memories of child abuse still haunt a woman was awarded First Prize at the B.C. Post Secondary Film Festival in 1988. After spending fifteen years working in the ever changing technical world of digital media, Frances is now a co-author with six other women of Hawai'i Sip 'n' Swim Club, Lessons Learned at the Edge of the Pool. Frances currently lives in Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii.

"So, how'd you come to be in Hawaii?"

The women of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel's water aerobics class often find themselves answering this question. Arriving in Hawaii at different times, from different countries, each has her own fascinating tale to tell.

One woman survived the horror of the London Blitz, while another almost drowned at the hands of an abusive husband. One learned to survive in the backwoods in the "Dirty Thirties," while a fourth had a close encounter with a mob boss. One grew up in the north of Canada; another learned to swim in the English Channel. All of the stories uniquely trace how fate inevitably led each woman to live on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Between them, the ladies of the Hawaii Sip 'n Swim Club have experienced most of the twentieth century, had thirteen husbands (including an FBI most-wanted con man), and lived numerous adventures full of humor and tragedy. Laugh and cry your way through their stories, and don’t be surprised if one day you find yourself on the Big Island. Just be sure to try the water aerobics class—who knows whom you’ll meet!

Eliza Cahill is a promising young writer, creative director, and designer. She self-published her first poetry book, Paper Life Vest in 2014, followed by its sequel, Words Float, in 2015. The poems reflect a surreal combination of her childhood emersion in nature, the underground hip-hop revolution and an afterglow of the feminist movement.

Eliza was born abroad in Milan Italy, before her parents moved to a scenic, Sierra-Foothill, community winery where she experienced a classic European upbringing and art-focused education. At age nine she met the experimental poet Eric Nightingale who took her on as an apprentice, helping hone her craft. Later, she was mentored by the esteemed folk singer/songwriter and storyteller Utah Phillips, shortly before he passed.

Eliza began performing her poetry at sixteen in various Santa Cruz and San Francisco venues. She received multiple awards for her Poetry, most recently in the Big-Island-National-Spoken-Word-Competition, where she took home the 2014 title of “Big Island Slam-Champion.”

Now, Eliza coaches creative writing workshops, co-facilitates the Waimea Writers Group, and serves as a writer/director in the Waimea Community Theater. She spends her free time working on her brain-children; Frida: A Cultural Revolution Magazine, Her novel: a historical fiction set in 8th century Byzantium, and Simple-Market.com; a virtual community marketplace with a local alternative currency aptly named “Mangos”.

Cahill’s book Words Float is an eloquent goodbye to childhood, coupled with poignant last walks down memory lane.  This book explores the authors love, life and woes with tender honesty and razor-sharp insight.
