Suzanne Bearth was born in Saint Paul Minnesota, in the French Canadian village of Little Canada and grew up on the shores of Lake Gervais. She married Joe Bearth in November 1956, who strongly encouraged her to pursue her pastry talents. Suzanne loved to enter baking competitions at the Minnesota State Fair and won many blue ribbons and national contests. Her love of pastry took her to Chicago where she attended the Wilton School of Cake Decorating with her instructor McKinley Wilton, founder of Wilton Enterprises. While busy raising a family she worked in catering, and baked and decorated hundreds of cakes for many dignitaries and celebrities such as the Governor of Minnesota and Dr. Seuss.
While her two sons attended St. Paul Votech and daughter Joy in high school, Suzanne graduated in 1978 from the prestigious Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. She was offered a teaching position and for the next two years was the first woman instructor for the baking program. When Hawaii called in 1980 Suzanne opened her own bakeshop in Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii.The whole family chipped in and Suzanne’s Bakeshop became a Kona favorite for over 20 years.
As a lifetime member of the American Culinary Federation, she is equally at home with a canvas, easel and oil paints. Rather than a harmony of marizpan, chocolate or glazes, she focuses on oil painting and dry brush techniques taught by Big Island artist Edwin Kayton, she has studied with him for years, both in Kona and Italy. Her images reflect these surroundings as she works in a realistic style taught by Kayton in classes she hosts on the lanai of her home in Kailua Kona. Her subjects range from still life to landscapes, and include charming and charismatic villages of Tuscany, Umbria and Calabria as well as Island seascapes and whimsical baked goods.
There is no denying that her love of the culinary arts spills over onto her canvas . . .
or is it the other way around? She is eloquent on the subject of culinary arts, having won Gold Medal and Best in Show accolades for many years on the mainland and in Hawaii, creating stunning edible works of art while fusing the basic elements of food and fine art . . . from the palette for the palate.
Though now retired, Suzanne continues to share her skills. Her home is complete with an extensive gingerbread kitchen, and each December friends and family gather to build and decorate gingerbread houses under her tutelage. The Edible Art Cookbook has been a creative work in progress for many years. Suzanne hopes to share her unique love of art and edible goodies through the recipes contained within. Each recipe paired with her one-of-a-kind paintings and will allow you to get just a little taste of her combined artistic and culinary inspirations, friends, family, and extensive travels.
